My names is Shaft and I have been living here for 35 to 40 years and ride a one-wheel unicycle and here's my electric bike as well, but I left my unicycle at home.

I’ve been coming to Etty & Tyler for about 30 years, and I know Martin very well- he’s more of a friend and like family. They’re very good mechanically and very professionally.

Robin. This bike was given to me by Chris, my next door neighbour. And he had it built for him in the 1950s. It lived in a cellar for a long time. So I had it repainted, reconstructed, rebuilt.

It’s an original 1950s Leech marathon steel bike, built by William Leech. He was a local man. His workshop was somewhere around Stratford station. There’s no gears it’s only one speed and the pedals are directly linked to the rear wheel.

I have another bike for commuting, which was built locally by Sam Tailor. I do practical cycling- so I commute by cycling, and I have done so for 20 years. Cycling into the city and back every day is much more reliable and affordable than public transport.

I always thought having something in between home and work is useful. Because there is this sort of mindless focus about cycling, and you have to be concentrating when you’re cycling. It’s this opportunity to wind down a bit.

Keith Hallam. I'm from Coventry but my wife's from Forest Gate and when I first met her- the first weekend I came down to London you think you're going to Oxford Street, but what I had to do in 1980 was bring her younger brother's bike [to Etty & Tyler’s] to get repaired. So everybody in Coventry thinks it's a glamorous coming to London, but I had to come in here! I have been coming here for 43 years.

[This shop] is like a home or a family- we've lived in London since 1995 now. Our children went here through to tricycles, little bikes, and adult bikes.

When the children were younger, with cycling, you can go to the park […] if you work out a sneaky little side route down the side roads you can get to the park in the evening. It takes you five minutes to get there instead of 15 and it's more time with the children

I'm Andy Slight from Plaistow, I collect Raleigh Choppers, I've always wanted one as a kid, but could never have one. But when I was 40, I thought I was going to get one...and now I've got seven of them! This is one of the original 1973 Mark 2 Ultra Violet Raleigh Choppers.

I can remember my friend lived on Upton Lane, just around the corner from here and he had this very model in this colour. Everyone was envious. It was brilliant. But the shame was, there used to be a sweet shop on the corner called Candy Corner. He went in to get sweets one day and come out and someone had nicked his bike. He ended up with a Raleigh 5 ear racer after that, but it was nothing like the Chopper bike.

I've also got a Pinkie 5 Gear, another Ultra Violet one which has got all the accessories, mirrors, aerials, everything that you could buy for a Raleigh Chopper, but it's a real heavy bike to ride now. I've also got a Black Prismatic and a Silver Mk 2 two and a couple of Mk 3's.

When I was a kid I used to come by and talk to Ted on the way to school. They used to have an alleyway and he would be fixing up scooters in the back - all the Lambrettas would be out here.

Karen. We live in Stratford and we are members of Newham Cyclists, part of the London Cycling Campaign. We cycle to work, we cycle for leisure, and we cycle to take other people out cycling. We don’t have a car, we gave up our car, and we manage just fine.

I have these massive waterproof panniers on my bike - I have my Christmas parcels in here at the moment that I am going to take to the post office.

Steven Smith. I made this bike, it’s got a distressed look but it's very, very practical.

I did my cycling proficiency test when I was 11, and I have been cycling ever since, pretty much without a break!

I think cycling in Newham is the absolute most obvious thing to do.

Everywhere is nearby.

It's flat- no hills. You just get on – and roll along. It's much improved in the areas where they've reduced the traffic- low traffic neighbourhoods. LTN.

One think I love about cycling is that you’re outside, and you say hello to people because you're actually out in the street, you're not in enclosed in a car. You're exposed, so you're much more inclined to kind of make eye contact with people. I really like that - that's lovely. You're in the moment on a bike.

I’m Tyler Etty and I live in Chingford.

This bike is a Renegade 1200 watt motor, and I’ve had it for well over a year now. It goes quite fast, and it’s very fun.

My dad got it for me as a present, he surprised me with it! The bike was on the bench at the back and I didn't see it at first.

It’s amazing being a part of this shop. I get free repairs for bikes, Luckily, if my bikes damaged they can fix it. I'm working on cycles at the moment but I'm gonna slowly work on motorbikes. I'm looking to work here when I'm older.

My name is CJ, and I’m from Stratford. This is the only bike shop I know, and that I come to- we always come to this one. It’s a good shop.

I get my bike out when my son comes to my house, I do enjoy riding, but every time I need my bike fixed, or something done, I always come here- I come to where I know my bread is buttered.

Chris Kasho. “My bike, the one I have with me today, is built by Jesse Butler. It's still going as a bike shop but they don't make bikes anymore. But you know, back in the 1970s- 80s, pretty well, every local bike shop would build frames.

I acquired it from a guy I work with back in the early 1980s, as he was giving up his amateur racing phase. It was absolutely state of the art at that time. The only people who would have a bike better than that would be the professional racers.

My name Colin Bettis and I moved to Grosvenor road over 30 years ago, and I have been coming here for bikes, and bike parts ever since.

What I like about cycling is the freedom.

It also keeps me fit and I get to see different places.

I don’t cycle much now, I don’t get the time, but I used to go out to Colchester in Essex, when I was in school. At play time and break time I would always be cycling out in the countryside.

The Cannondale bike is my favourite bike at the moment, she is my baby. I have had her for 4 years. I brought her second hand and changed most of her parts. Her name is ‘Come on, girl”

Hi, I’m Bill. I'm from Forest Gate and I've lived here for about 45 years. This is a Dawes Super Galaxy classic touring bike, and I used it to ride from Land's End to John O'Groats in 2013. Overall, I did 1000miles, so yeah, good little run that.

I am the treasurer for Newham Cyclists and have been involved in the committee for a long time.

I help out at the fix your ride stall, getting people on their bikes and getting them riding again. I show them how to do the simple stuff like fixing your punctures and adjusting your brakes. We have people who have come along to us and say, “Oh, I've been meaning to get to the bike shop, you know, my bike had a puncture for six months. You say, "10 minutes you can get it back on the road.” So that's what we hope to do.

I also got a project where I take in bikes that people don't want and I do them up for refugees in East London, with Care for Calais. That helps them get them on the road and it helps move them around.

Frames Of Mind launched the Full Cycle project in a joint celebration to mark Etty & Tylers's amazing 60th anniversary.

We asked Etty Tyler customers and local residents to share stories about their relationship with Etty & Tyler, their love of bikes and cycling in Newham.

My name's Jackie, and I am in my late 50s, and I learned to ride my bike during lockdown. And the reason why is because I've got arthritis in my knee, and I was told that that riding a bike could help. So in my mid 50s off I went and tried to find a bike during lockdown, and I got this beautiful thing.

And my baby brother, Adrian took me around and around the cemetery pushing me and holding my hand. And that's how I learned to ride a bike. I love riding and I go riding with my other brother as well. Now, we go up and down in the park and around Newham.

That was the first time I got on my bike, and I would say that I’m a bit addicted.

What I like about riding a bike is that it’s just so freeing and you can just ride around and get to know the area a little bit more. You're on your bike, so you go around different roads and you feel a bit more confident.

I've gone around to various cemeteries and parks as well, and that's really beautiful. I'm getting more confident as time goes on. But I am a new bike rider.
